 MAYOTTE

A. THE DEPARTMENT

Overseas Department of Mayotte is one larger island, Grande Terre, and
one smaller, Petite Terre, and is located in the Indian Ocean between
Africa and Madagascar.  Mayotte voted in 2009 to become a French
overseas department which qualifies it for EU funding.  Almost
everything is imported, making the cost of living very high but Mayotte
is still more prosperous than the rest of the region. The military base
and French aid reduces local initiative.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~204,000 and official languages French; Shimaore is
spoken by 80%, Shibushi by 30%.  ~90% are Moore, ~10% Other.
Overpopulation and illegal immigration from other islands (up to 30% of
the population) hinder progress.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY

Almost all Maores are Sunni Muslim, but mosque attendance is low.
Almost all Christians are non-indigenous and from other Francophone
countries.
~97.86% are Muslim, ~1.64% claim to be Christian, ~0.5% Non-religious.
In the Christian category:
~1.26% are Catholic, ~0.11% Protestant, ~0.2% Unaffiliated.
Evangelicals represent ~0.1% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~0.2% of the population.
