A. THE COUNTRY

Macau, Special Administrative Region of China, is a tiny peninsula and two islands of 12.2 sq. km.  It is one of the most densely populated areas on earth with an economy dominated by gambling and tourism.  Macau is under Chinese rule with a high degree of autonomy.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~547,600.  Official languages are Chinese and Portuguese.  86% speak Cantonese, but Mandarin is also widely spoken. Chinese 93.6%, Macanese (Eurasian) 2.4%, Other 4% (European, Filipino, other southeast Asian).

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

Freedom of religion is guaranteed by law.

Chinese 62.01%, Buddhist 17.1%, non-religious 14.94%, Christian 5.35%,

Baha’i 0.5%, Muslim 0.1%.

In the Christian category:

Catholic 3.14%, Protestant 1.61%, Independent 0.22%, Anglican 0.09%.

Evangelicals are 1.6% of the population.

Charismatics are 0.5% (0.2% of those are Pentecostals).
