HUNGARY

A. THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Hungary is a landlocked, Central European state on the
River Danube with rich agricultural land.  Hungary enjoys a strong share
of foreign investment into Central Europe.  Economic difficulties,
compounded by the financial crisis of 2008-2009, have required the
parliamentary democratic government to implement reform and austerity
measures.  Widespread corruption, political scandal and the economy has
brought the people much disappointment and skepticism.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~9,974,000 and the official language is Hungarian.
~86.8% are Magyar (Hungarian).  Over a third of all Hungarians live in
other lands.  ~13.2% are Minorities (Romani i.e. Gypsy, Slavic, German,
Jews, Romanian).

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

There is freedom of religion.  The openness of the post-Communist 1990’s
has passed and it is now increasingly difficult to openly share the
Gospel.  Public spiritual life is characterized by a rise in occult
activity and eastern mysticism, including pagan witchcraft, ancient
Magyar shamanism and Tibetan Buddhism.  Most common is a pick-and-choose
spirituality that is effectively non-religious, with some personal
sentiment.  ~87.99% claim to be Christian, ~10.9% Non-religious, ~0.91%
Jewish, ~0.16% Muslim, ~0.04% Buddhist.
In the Christian category:
~59.56% are Catholic, ~23.73% Protestant, ~1.77% Unaffiliated, ~1.07%
Orthodox.
Evangelicals represent ~2.8% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~2.4% and of those ~0.2% are Pentecostals.
