A. THE COUNTRY

The Republic of Nauru in the world’s smallest island republic, and is
located in Micronesia in the South Pacific.  It is 21 sq. km. of raised
coral atoll ringed with sandy beaches.  Nauru does not have an official
capital but the seat of parliament, led by the president, is in the
largest settlement, Yaren.  The country is deeply in debt with the only
income sources – some phosphate mining and sale of fishing rights –
being very inadequate to cover expenses.  Almost all food must be
imported, and freshwater supplies are insufficient.

B. THE PEOPLE

The population is ~10,300 and official languages Nauruan and English.
~73.4% are Micronesian, ~26.6% Other (Chinese, Caucasian, Tuvaluan).
Half of the indigenous population has diabetes, 90% are overweight and
unemployed.

C. RELIGIONS AND CHRISTIANITY/PENTECOSTALISM

~91.5% claim to be Christian, ~5.3% Non-religious, ~3.2% Chinese.
In the Christian category:
~57,35% are Protestant, ~29.06% Catholic, ~2.93% Anglican, ~1.39% are
considered ‘marginal’, ~0.8% Unaffiliated.
Evangelicals represent ~12.1% of the population.
Charismatics represent ~10.8% and of those ~7.9% are Pentecostals.
